Each year the zany state of California hosts the Annual Big Dog Parade in Santa Barbara, where contenders both big and small compete for top prizes and over-the-top bragging rights. Dog lovers travel from all across the United States to participate in the nation’s largest dog parade and the Smithsonian Channel was there the catch it all on film.

Thousands of spectators line the street to get a glimpse of some of the crazy and outlandish outfits worn by dogs and owners. After the parade, the festivities continue with the Canine Festival held at the Old Chase Palm Park. Attendees can also enjoy a day of kid’s activities, live music, great food, vendors and some special celebrity guests!

Be sure to check out the program “Unleashed: A Dogumetary” where you’ll see some things you won’t believe and be amazed at how patient some of these dogs are with their very creative owners.  Unleashed premieres this Saturday (June 6th) and is airing all month long on Smithsonian Channel but you can watch a preview of the dogs on parade below.
