Muhammad Ali: From Boxer to Humanitarian
“I’m young, I’m handsome, I’m pretty and can’t possibly be beat!”
- Muhammad Ali
Handsome and pretty! It’s hard to live more boldly than the greatest, Muhammad Ali.
I’ve never been particularly interested in boxing, but after a friend talked me into watching the Ali vs. Foreman fight on DVD several years back, I’ve been fascinated with Muhammad Ali. The intensity in his eyes fascinated me. His boldness and energy were palpable even through the television screen.
Recently, Ali was awarded the NAACP President’s Award in honor of his social and humanitarian activism. It is this softer side of the aggressive boxer that shines through in Lives that Changed the World. Thoughtful interviews and expressive individuals tell the story of an often controversial individual who is truly larger than life.

I loved watching his ringside coach, Ferdie Pacheco, describe the many stages of Ali’s life. The excitement with which he recollects a young Ali is contagious, but his voice, laced with anger when he tried to talk Ali out of continuing to fight, is almost devastating.
I highly recommend catching the Muhammad Ali story this month on Smithsonian Channel. But be warned, you may be inspired to commit random acts of community service afterward.
