My Visit to Sant Ocean Hall

When you first walk into the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, you are immediately drawn into following the wave of sightseers towards the Sant Ocean Hall, which opened on September 25th. I was lucky enough to visit the museum a few weekends ago, and if you have a family, trust me, Saturday is the best day to go- there’s so much going on!

The entire hall is bathed in shades of blue light with a dozen huge screens perched at  the top of the walls and encircling the room. The screens play real-life scenes from under the sea and made me feel like I was  really part of the deep blue ocean.

It doesn’t matter where you begin your visit, there is something for everyone! For the little ones, each section of the hall showcases special displays set at a kid-friendly height, with aquatic-themed questions for them to answer.

At adult and teen height, there are flat screen monitors with short educational movies and large colorful graphics and facts. The hall is bright, cheerful and fun for the whole family, as you can see from my pictures.

The hall is packed with so much information like Deep OceanShores and Shallows and Ocean Today- you may need to take a break! But don’t worry, there is enough open space for large groups to tour the hall, with seating arranged throughout for when those legs get a little tired.

If you really need to rest for a few, head to the IMAX theater to watch Deep Sea 3-D, for an up-close and personal experience! Make sure you check the schedule to see when you can fit this awesome movie into your tour because it’s not something you want to miss!

The museum has also uploaded some new photos to Flickr, so if you can’t make a stop during your next trip to DC, take a look at them and pick out your favorites.
