We all know Stonehenge is that big circle of rocks erected a really long time ago on Salisbury Plain in England.  We also know that it’s breathtakingly beautiful and should probably be on our list of “Places to Visit” at some point in our lives. But what we don’t know is why it was built and who built it.

And what exactly is a “henge” anyway?

(Hint, HENGE: A prehistoric architectural structure. In form, it is a nearly circular or oval-shaped flat area over 20 meters (65 feet) in diameter that is enclosed and delimited by a boundary earthwork that usually comprises a ditch with an external bank. Referenced by Wikipedia.com)

For years, people have been fascinated with solving the mystery of Stonehenge and learning more about its purpose and origin, including BBC Timewatch, who along with Smithsonian Channel initiated the first excavation of the site in almost 50 years. Because even though it is one of the most famous landmarks in the world, there is still very little we know for certain about its history.

Was it a mythical healing center? Observatory?  Or burial ground for royalty? Archeologists Tim Darvill and Geoff Wainwright sought to find these answers and discover the secrets of Stonehenge.

Smithsonian Channel cameras were on hand to film this historical undertaking. Here’s a sneak peek of the new documentary, Stonehenge Deciphered, that premieres Saturday, September 27th at 9 PM EST on Smithsonian Channel.
